Black History Month 2024: African Americans and the Arts 

February is here and we’d like to take a moment to honor and celebrate the remarkable history and contributions of African Americans in our nation. Did you know that every year, the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH) delegates a theme for Black History Month? For 2024, the theme is African Americans and the Arts! This year, ArtsFairfax proudly recognizes the profound influence of black artists and leaders who continuously enrich our cultural landscape.

City of Fairfax Black History Month Proclamation  

On February 13th, join the City of Fairfax for a significant moment of recognition and celebration as Mayor Read presents the Black History Month Proclamation at the City of Fairfax Council Meeting. Whether attendees join in person at City Hall or tune in online, this event promises to be a powerful testament to the contributions and legacies of African Americans. Learn more!

GMU CFA Presents A.I.M by Kyle Abraham  

On February 17th, head over to the Center for an electrifying evening with choreographer Kyle Abraham, as he presents his boundary-breaking contemporary dance works at The Center. Known for his innovative blend of social and classical dance styles, Abraham’s performance explores the intersections of identity and history with captivating energy. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the visionary artistry of Abraham’s company, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, and engage with the community through workshops during the week leading up to the show.  Learn more!

 

Reston Community Center Presents Soul to Soul 

On February 18th, Reston Community Center presents Soul to Soul. This captivating musical presentation celebrates the shared experiences and struggles of African American and Yiddish American communities in America. Featuring an all-star lineup including Lisa Fishman, Cantor Magda Fishman, Elmore James, Zalmen Mlotek, and Tony Perry, accompanied by Brian Glassman on bass, Dmitri Slepovitch on clarinet and saxophone, and Matt Temkin on percussion, Soul to Soul weaves together the rich cultural tapestries of both groups in a deeply moving performance. Learn more!

The City of Fairfax Presents ARTScreen  

Join the City of Fairfax on February 23rd as they present ARTScreen featuring A Great Day in Harlem (1994). Directed by Jean Bach, this documentary compiles interviews with top jazz musicians in New York City in 1958 for a piece in Esquire magazine. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary/Features, this film offers a captivating glimpse into a pivotal moment in jazz history. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the film starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to mark your calendars for the next screening on April 12th, featuring Midnight in Paris (2011). Learn more!
