Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art (Tephra ICA) is hiring a Camp Instructor for 2024 Summer Art Camp. Presented in partnership with Reston Association (RA), Tephra ICA Summer Art Camp provides a safe and educational environment for campers between the ages of 6-9 years old to explore contemporary and historical art through artmaking, critical thinking, and creative play.

Summer Art Camp will be held in RA’s Glade Recreation Area in Reston, Virginia. Summer Art Camp 2024 will have six sessions and run between July 1st – August 9th, 2024. Each camp session will run Monday – Friday, with the exception of July 4th. The Camp Instructor will work Monday – Friday, 8:30AM – 12:30PM to lead a half day of art instruction and activities. Campers will be present at camp between 9AM – 4PM; and in the afternoon, campers will engage in a variety of recreational learning activities as led by RA Camp Counselors.

The Camp Instructor will provide enthusiastic and thorough direction in visual art to camp participants. The Instructor will lead and facilitate all art instruction and they will collaborate with Tephra ICA staff to develop and implement fun, engaging, educational content.

The Instructor will report directly to Tephra ICA’s Education Manager and Executive Director.

Responsibilities include:
● During the spring, work collaboratively with Tephra ICA’s Education Manager to create curricula to include daily and weekly art projects and lessons that are developmentally appropriate, intellectually engaging, and fitting for each camp theme.
● Develop and deliver art curriculum content, assist with classroom management; and ensure camper safety, educational development, and general well-being with assistance from Camp Counselors.
● Lead daily and weekly camp room set-up, break-down at mid-day point, cleaning, and organizing.
● Maintain accurate program records and as necessary; report incidents to Tephra’s Education Manager.
● Have knowledge of, enforces, and follows all health, safety, and emergency guidelines associated with the camp program.
● Participate in weekly check-ins with Tephra ICA Education Manager for general status updates, supply requests, etc.
● Perform additional tasks as required.

Key Qualifications:
● Excellent classroom management skills
● Classroom teaching experience with young age groups
● Art curriculum development and class instruction skills effective for mixed age classrooms
● Familiarity and comfort with a wide range of art materials and techniques

The ideal candidate will have a teaching certification, experience as an elementary art teacher, the ability to create high-quality content that is engaging and appropriate for a fun summer camp environment, and interest in and familiarity with contemporary art themes and practices.

Key Facts:
● Summer Art Camp 2024 will have six weekly sessions and run between July 1st – August 9th, 2024. Each camp session will run Monday – Friday.
● The Camp Instructor will work Monday – Friday, 8:30AM – 12:30PM to lead a half day of art instruction and activities. Campers will be present at camp between 9AM – 4PM. In the afternoon, campers will engage in a variety of play and learning activities as led by Camp Counselors.
● In spring 2024, the Camp Instructor will work collaboratively with Tephra ICA’s Education and Public Programs Manager to develop three camp curricula for campers age 6-9. More details about camp themes and schedules are available below.
● The Camp Instructor will need to be screened through background checks and fingerprinting and will need to be CPR certified. If the Instructor does not have an active CPR certification, Tephra ICA will pay the associated fees and organize a CPR certification training session for the Instructor to be completed before the beginning of camp.
● Compensation is $30/hour. For each day of camp, the Camp Instructor will be compensated for 3 hours of instruction time and a total of 1 hour of prep time at $30/hour. For curriculum development, the Camp Instructor will be compensated for a total of 7 hours of curriculum development time per camp theme.
