The Arts Council of Fairfax County will recognize Dominion Resources, Inc. (Dominion) at the fifth annual Arts Awards on October 14, 2016 with the prestigious Jinx Hazel Arts Award. Dominion will be honored for its tremendous support and long-term investment in the artistic and cultural life and vitality of rural and urban communities in Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.

“Dominion’s extraordinary support of arts and culture has helped to enrich community life throughout Fairfax and Virginia. We are excited to name Dominion as this year’s Jinx Hazel award winner. The community impact they’ve had through both their monetary and volunteer support has been far-reaching over many years,” said Linda S. Sullivan, president and CEO of the Arts Council of Fairfax County.

The Dominion Foundation annually invests more than $20 million in support programs, activities, and charitable giving that help improve the quality of life for people in states served by Dominion companies. The Dominion Foundation supports nonprofit causes that meet basic human needs, protects the environment, supports education and initiatives that promote community vitality. At least 26 nonprofit arts organizations in Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church have been supported by the Dominion Foundation since 2011.

“We believe that we as a company are only as strong as the communities we serve,” said Deborah Tompkins Johnson, Dominion’s Northern Regional Policy Director. “Providing support in the areas of critical needs, education, the environment and community vitality represents our varied range of commitment. And of course, we value and eagerly support the arts in the greater Fairfax County community.”

Dominion’s involvement and contributions in Fairfax County and the Commonwealth range from supporting both small and mid-sized arts and cultural initiatives through its state-wide Dominion ArtStars awards program, a joint partnership with Virginians for the Arts, to program support and redevelopment in large urban centers such as the 5.5 million capital project for CenterStage in Richmond.

Since 2011, the annual Dominion ArtStars program has recognized 41 nonprofit arts organizations state-wide totaling $142,000 in awards. Four Fairfax organizations have been awarded for their contributions in arts and education honoring partnerships and collaborations with the schools. Past awardees were Fairfax’s Northern Virginia Youth Winds, a youth division of the City of Fairfax Band Association (2015), Mclean Project for the Arts (2014), Creative Cauldron (2012), and Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts (2012).

“It is rewarding to have been recognized by Dominion and Virginians for the Arts for our hard work making music education and symphonic ensemble performances available to youth, families, and adults in the community we serve,” said John Flahive, president & CEO of the City of Fairfax Band Association.

For many years, Dominion and its company volunteers have supported multiple festivals and community activities in Fairfax County including Celebrate Fairfax, ArtSpace Herndon’s American roots music concert series, Herndon Festival, and the International Children’s Festival. Volunteering is at the heart of Dominion’s community programs and is deeply embedded in the company’s history. Dominion and its employees annually contribute more than 100,000 volunteer hours in states served by Dominion companies. Archival documents indicate that, as far back as 1918, employees of Virginia Railway and Power Company joined forces to package boxes of food and deliver them to families in need during the holiday season. Today’s employees continue to embody that spirit – a longstanding tradition of community service that few companies can match. Dominion’s longstanding volunteer program received the 2015 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award for its outstanding contributions.

“Dominion has supported Celebrate Fairfax for more than 20 years through its philanthropy, leadership, support of STEAM education, and community involvement. Their investment builds capacity for our organization, and adds to the cultural diversity and vitality of our communities, and to the educational success of our students,” said Barry Feil, president and CEO of Celebrate Fairfax.

The Arts Council will present the fifth annual Arts Awards at the Fairview Park Marriott, located at 3111 Fairview Park Drive, in Falls Church, Virginia 22042 on Friday, October 14, 2016 from noon to 2:00pm. The event recognizes the extraordinary contributions of artists and arts organizations, as well as the corporations, foundations, and individuals that support the arts in Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.
