Arts Council of Fairfax County Announces surcreative as Artist Team Bringing Imagine Art Here to Seven Corners in Spring 2018

Fairfax County, VA – The Arts Council of Fairfax County has selected an Annandale-based artist team, surcreative LLC, for a public art engagement project at Seven Corners. The second in a series of projects for the Imagine Art Here initiative, this project will elicit a vision for the role of the arts in the community and collect resident, workforce, and visitor feedback on the type of facilities, public art, and related arts amenities that are desired in the redevelopment of the area. The project will be entitled INOUT and begin in the spring of 2018.

“We are excited to be working with surcreative to engage the community of Seven Corners through the INOUT public art project,” said Linda S. Sullivan, President and CEO of the Arts Council of Fairfax County. “We’re looking forward to seeing how INOUT connects people of diverse backgrounds and experiences while empowering the community.”

Next spring, public engagement will take place at sites throughout the Seven Corners area, and the primary installation site is located at Route 50 and Sleepy Hollow Road. The artist team plans to collect community feedback through a variety of engagement strategies including social media and on-line surveys as well as through the installation itself. Photo portraits of the community will be projected on an interactive eight foot cube.

INOUT will enhance the experience of residents, employees, and visitors passing through the area, promote community participation, and increase public awareness of the potential for public art. The Arts Council is working with Fairfax County Government, corporate sponsors, and community partners to carry out the project.

The surcreative team, featured in the photo to the left, includes Natalia Brizuela-Pires (Art Director and Founder), Hector Montalvo (Architectural Designer), Julieta Guillermet (Lead Architectural Designer), and Edwin Coimbre (Architectural Designer).

“Our interest in public art grows as a way to merge our passions for architecture, graphic design, music and photography,” said Julieta Guillermet, Lead Architectural Designer with surceative. “We have always been eager to create, and this combination of passions have led us to try experiential design! We believe in the power of communicating through art. It is extremely satisfying to know that we are bringing art to the community and making an impact at the same time. Overall, our goal is to evoke emotions, connect with the community, and make you feel part of Seven Corners!”

“This Imagine Art Here project is the perfect way to combine our passions for the community and art while inspiring others,” said Natalia Pires, Art Director and Founder of surcreative. “We’re excited to bring to life a public art piece that can engage and represent the Seven Corners community.”

In 2015, the Arts Council launched the series of Imagine Art Here projects with Tysons Tiles by artist Julia Vogl. That project was funded in part by an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Arts Council is currently seeking sponsors for the Seven Corners project, and donations will be matched by an NEA Art Works grant. Input from the Imagine Art Here initiative will inform the Master Arts Plan being spearheaded by the Arts Council on behalf of the County. The goal of the plan is to expand community access to and engagement in the arts and culture by planning cultural facilities and public art throughout Fairfax County that reflects its diversity, considers existing facilities, and responds to future growth. In 2010, the Board of Supervisors tasked the Arts Council of Fairfax County, the official local arts agency for the County, with the collaborative leadership of the Master Arts Plan.
