Shakespeare’s Cymbeline is believed to be one of his final plays and is categorized as a romance due to its unconventional and experimental blend of genres and forms. In the play, Cymbeline is the King of Britain and has three children. Two sons were taken from him in their infancy, and his remaining daughter, Innogen, betrayed him by marrying a commoner known as Posthumus Leonatus. Banished, Posthumus makes a shady deal with a “friend,” Iachimo, who goes to court and tries to woo Innogen. Terrified, Innogen disguises as a boy and runs to the forest in an arduous journey to find her beloved Posthumus. And that’s only a sliver of this epic tale that scholars will argue is Shakespeare’s closest to grounded fantasy. In the forest and beyond lay evil queens, nasty stepbrothers, visits from Gods, trusty servants, and an oncoming war. Ensemble-driven, movement-based, and rich with moral quandaries, Cymbeline is a wonderful push into the grand world of Shakespearean performance.
