Plein Air Landscape with Jill Banks

Come join the adventure! There’s nothing like painting on location to breathe life into your work. Students will learn about site selection, developing the compositional sketch, breaking down “things” into abstract shapes, how to deal with architecture, moving objects, and working in direct color. Painting the Landscape classes will be taught in plein air in outdoor locations – including farms and nearby towns. Students will need their own portable easels – and know how to set up/use them. Fees for admittance to certain locations and models (one session may be of the figure in the landscape) are additional. Painting locations will be emailed to students the day before each class (or sooner). You must pre-register so you’ll know where to show up on the first (and subsequent) days of class. We explore all sorts of treasures in the areas surrounding Great Falls, VA and in Northern Virginia. So much fun!

Medium: oils. Students can work in other mediums as long as they know that medium well. If using another medium, instruction will be all the other elements of painting.

Subjects will include: animals (Frying Pan Park, private farm, horse facility), water, clouds/sky, urban (people and architecture) and gardens. In the case of inclement weather, we will find an indoor or covered location or use the School’s classroom in Great Falls VA. (Suggestions are welcome.) If meeting in the classroom, students will work from their plein air sketches and/or their own personal photographs. At each location we will work in a small area so that neighboring students benefit from at easel critiques and instruction.
