Catalina Novac

I am an artist exploring happiness, joy, and well-being through abstract painting. I study at the Art League in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, under acclaimed artist John Blee, whose work is held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery, MoMA, and museums worldwide. I also hold a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Rochester, where I studied with Professor Richard M. Ryan, a pioneer in the science of motivation and well-being. Inspired by Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), my paintings celebrate autonomy, competence, and relatedness—the three psychological needs essential for flourishing. Using luminous pastel colors, I create works that capture moments of connection, inner beauty, and hope, inviting viewers to discover joy even in life’s imperfections.
