National Treasures

Event Details

In the acoustically rich sanctuary of Vienna’s Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, The McLean Symphony will conclude its 47th season at 7:PM on Sunday, June 2, and simultaneously celebrate another landmark birthday of its principal conductor, Maestro Dingwall Fleary. The program of National Treasures will consist only of music by American Composers, including a composition by 13 year-old local student, Daniel Carroll, winner of a festival sponsored by the Northern Virginia Music Teachers’ Association, and a work written in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by Eric Lacy, PhD, a recent graduate of Louisiana State University titled, A Dream of Conscience.

The major work will be the Symphony No. 1, subtitled “Afro-American” written by William Grant Still, who lived from 1895 to 1978. A favorite among favorites, Fleary has conducted this work with numerous orchestras in the United States, and abroad. The orchestra’s diversity will be on display as listeners are treated to The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives, a bold interpretation of American Salute by Morton Gould, and selections by the legendary Leroy Anderson. Of the latter, one of his all-time greatest hits will feature a virtuoso performance featuring an old-fashioned office relic, The Typewriter. The program will conclude with favorite patriotic songs during which the audience will be invited sing along with the full orchestra.

Before the Downbeat . . .

Starting 30 minutes prior to the concert, Music Director Fleary and his associate Igor Sarmientos will hold an informal discussion about the program – it’s overall concept, the historical aspects of the music, the composers, and tips on what to listen for in each piece. This feature is open to everyone.
