The Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia, the DC region’s premier semiprofessional orchestra, seeks a new Music Director and Conductor to lead the orchestra beginning with our 2023-2024 season. The MD reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for carrying out the artistic vision of the organization. The MD is responsible for the selection of repertoire, planning, leading, and conducting orchestra rehearsals and concerts, and working closely with the Executive Director and Assistant Music Director to ensure that all musicians, audience members, and all other stake holders have a fulfilling and meaningful experience with SONOVA. The MD is responsible for the selection of new musicians using established audition procedures and will continually advance the ensemble’s artistic quality through progressive personnel and programming decisions. The MD will continue to further SONOVA’s reputation for planning exciting, educational, and innovative concerts. The MD will work with the staff and Board to ensure that all administrative responsibilities are covered, including participating in administration themselves when necessary. As the orchestra’s artistic leader, the MD must build and sustain the orchestra’s visibility and involvement in the Northern Virginia and greater Washington D.C region. They must be the public face of the organization. They are expected to work closely with the board of directors and staff to ensure the continued successful operation of the orchestra. The MD will be actively involved in fundraising efforts and will continue to expand SONOVA’s educational offerings.
