As part of their ongoing “ArtsFairfax Presents” initiative to showcase local artists in public spaces, ArtsFairfax has partnered with Springfield Town Center to exhibit Precious Burger, a contemporary mixed media artist, in a new show entitled “Through Me: Where Wonder Finds a Way” at the popular shopping and entertainment destination.
“At ArtsFairfax, we believe in arts’ ability to transform places into spaces, whether that is a space to gather and engage in conversation, or an environment that offers quiet contemplation. Ms. Burger’s work is bold, beautiful, and a perfect example of how art invites the viewer to look at themselves and their surroundings differently,” says Stuart Holt, ArtsFairfax President & CEO.
“We strive to create an environment where guests can gather and discover something new, and art has a way of making that feel more personal,” said Mikia Ross Wilson, Senior Marketing Director at Springfield Town Center. “Precious Burger’s work brings color, curiosity, and a sense of wonder to the center, and we’re thrilled to partner with ArtsFairfax for another year to celebrate a talented local artist in a space our community visits every day.”
In addition to the show, Ms. Burger will lead two free workshops this winter, inspired by the art on display. For 30 years, she was an art educator who witnessed children create from an experimental mindset, taking risks and making art without fear of getting it wrong. She comments, “My work explores what becomes possible when we reclaim the curiosity, play, and freedom that comes so naturally to us as children. A life-changing health crisis deepened my understanding that joy is not frivolous or reserved for easy seasons—it is essential to our well-being.”
According to her artist statement, Ms. Burger paints intuitively, building layered mixed media surfaces through movement, color, collage, expressive marks, and texture. Rather than work toward a predetermined conclusion, she responds to what emerges, allowing traces of earlier layers to remain as a visible history within each painting.
“In a culture that rewards speed, productivity, and certainty, I want my work to offer something different: a reason to pause, become curious, reconnect, and remain open to possibility. Wonder is still available to us—we simply have to make room for it,” she concludes.
“Through Me: Where Wonder Finds a Way” will remain on view from October through March 31, 2027 at Springfield Town Center (6500 Springfield Mall, Springfield VA 22150).
