Artist Grants and Poet Laureate

Overview

Artist Grants recognize Fairfax County artist’s individual achievements and demonstrated history of accomplishments. Awards are $5,000 each.

The Poet Laureate recognizes a professional poet’s achievements and their demonstrated history of accomplishments. It promotes their continued pursuit of their creative work, as well as community engagement in poetry. The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term (April 1, 2020-March 30, 2022) and will be awarded $5,000 for each year.

Eligibility

Artists residing in Fairfax County may apply. ARTSFAIRFAX awards this grant to artists in all disciplines, including:

  • Choreography
  • Creative writing
  • Dance performance
  • Film & new media
  • Music composition
  • Music performance
  • Theater performance
  • Visual arts
  • Poet Laureate (Please refer to the Poet Laureate Guidelines for specific eligibility criteria)

 

Application Review Process

Artist Grants are awarded through a competitive process. Staff review each application to ensure its completeness and the applicant’s eligibility. Then, applications are reviewed by panels composed of arts professionals with experience in a variety of disciplines.

The Poet Laureate is also a competitive process with separate guidelines, application and panel.

The panel process for both programs is the same with each application reviewed in a meeting open to the public, and applicants are encouraged to attend and observe. Following the panel meetings, the Grants Committee, a standing committee including members of the ARTSFAIRFAX Board of Directors, makes funding recommendations based upon the panel’s scores for approval by the ARTSFAIRFAX Board of Directors.
