The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts (BOPA) seeks mural artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for consideration and inclusion in the Baltimore Mural Program’s Mural Artist Registry by February 13, 2015. The Mural Artist Registry will be used to aid the selection of qualified artists for Baltimore Mural Program commissions and to distribute notifications regarding upcoming mural artist opportunities. This registry will also be made publicly available for groups seeking artists for hire.

They’re exciting and fun events that showcase innovation, creativity and hands-on making.  Northern Virginia is fortunate to have its own – the NoVa Mini Maker Faire. Our Faire is a family-friendly day of fun, excitement and hands-on learning.  It showcases the amazing creativity and diversity of makers in our area. The Faire will be on Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 10 am to 5pm at South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston.

EMULSION is back!

East City Art’s own juried exhibition returns to Gallery O on H this March, providing area artists with a unique opportunity to exhibit their artistic prowess.   Like their first exhibition in late 2013, EMULSION 2015 features cash prizes for the top three works, two people’s choice awards and the opportunity to showcase work in a professional setting. The competition is open to artists residing within 50 miles of East City Art Media’s Headquarters on Capitol Hill and we are excited to announce this year’s juror will be the incomparable Adah Rose Bitterbaum, owner and director of the Adah Rose Gallery in Kensington, MD.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2015 the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recognized the Arts Council of Fairfax County for its new Global Arts Initiative for which the organization received an Arts Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

ArtSpace Herndon invites photographers from Virginia, DC, Maryland, and West Virginia to participate in the 2015 ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Competition. The competition is open to fine art photographers aged 18 or older working in any medium (digital or analog, color or monochrome), and using any printing technique. Fine Art Photography of any subject is welcome; there is no required theme for entries. The judge is Carla Steckley. The entry fee is $25 with a deadline of January 20, 2015. $800.00 in cash prizes to be awarded at the judge’s discretion.

The community surrounding Lorton Prison was largely unaware of events taking place behind those high brick walls and razor-wire topped fences. These public lectures provide a revealing look at life at the DC Correctional Facility from the inside out.

Olly Olly, a new alternative art space, is now open in Fairfax. Join local artists on Tuesday, January 13, from 6pm-9pm for free drop-in Art Gym open studio nights for artists 18 and older. Art Gym open studio nights are hosted by local artists Abner De Jesus, Jason Davis, Jessica Kallista, and Javier Padilla. Space is limited. You can also sign up for special new membership rates for the Olly Olly Art Gym while supplies last.

The Fairfax Art League will host a Pop-Up show, "A Bigger Picture," from Friday, January 30 through Sunday, February 1, comprised of larger sized works featuring a wide variety of styles by over 30 artists from around the region.  The show will commemorate the Fairfax Art League’s grand re-opening of its Village Gallery, which has been closed for several months due to area construction.
