Avant-Folk (Macari-Sotelo Ensemble) (7:30 pm - 9:30 pm)

Since their beginning, more than two years ago, the inspiration of Avant-Folk has been exploring new ways to compose music with string instruments. Recently, the incorporation of acoustic percussion gave the group the rhythm support needed to liberate the strings to unlimited textures by adding strong groove sounds. The group found its roots in different contemporary styles and musical traditions that have been part of the musical background of each member, thus Avant-Folk propose a peculiar way to bring together electric and acoustic stringed instruments and percussion, with authentic experimentation and creativity with sound.

Avant-Folk includes:

Eblen Macari.- Acoustic guitar and Jarana jarocha:  Macari has a 30 year career that has developed a unique and personal style for creating music, mixing Middle East rhythms, ambient soundscapes and contemporary modal harmony with his 8 and 6 string guitars, mexican jarana and electronic devices. He has composed original music for documentaries, films, tv series, museums, archeological sites and planetariums.  He has traveled around the world playing with his group Eblen Macari Trio, He has produced 13 CDs.

Mauricio Sotelo.- Chapman Stick, and 12 string acoustic guitar: He is a member of the group Cabezas de Cera, a progressive rock band from Mexico, in which he plays several string instruments. He has developed a personal way to play and process the instruments created by his brother and drummer of CDC, Francisco Sotelo. With this band he has recorded 5 albums has performed in festivals around Europe, Asia, South and North America. Recently, the band released a DVD recorded live in 2009 at the prestigious North East Art Rock Festival.

Kabalán Macari.- Cajón Peruano, Darbuka and Pandero Jarocho: This young percussionist has different projects in Mexico City and most of the time is part of the group of his father “Eblen Macari Trio”.

Chapman Stick artist Rob Martino (http://robmartino.com) will open for Avant-Folk.  He recently released his debut CD, “One Cloud”.  Heavily influenced by progressive and art rock artists such as Jethro Tull, Rush, Marillion, Genesis, Kate Bush and Gentle Giant, Rob has aspired to incorporate similar intricate harmonic and melodic aspects to his playing style.  Rob is based in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area.

Admission $15 at the door.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a small folding chair.

Workhouse Film Institute: Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, The Mistress And The Tangerine (7:30 pm - 8:30 pm)

Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a cinematic journey inside the life and imagination of an icon of modern art. As a screen presence, Louise Bourgeois is magnetic, mercurial and emotionally raw. There is no separation between her life as an artist and the memories and emotions that affect her every day. Her process is on full display in this extraordinary documentary. As an artist, Louise Bourgeois has for six decades been at the forefront of successive new developments, but always on her own powerfully inventive and disquieting terms. In 1982, at the age of 71, she became the first woman to be honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In the decades since, she has created her most powerful and persuasive work that has been exhibited, studied and lectured on worldwide. Filmed with unparalleled access between 1993 and 2007, Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine, is a comprehensive and dramatic documentary of creativity and revelation. It is an intimate, human and educational engagement with an artist’s world.
